Annual sales for 2018 were estimated by Forbes to be $21.3 billion. An article in Forbes simply states there are “more nearly 3,000 stores” (June 2019, “ The World’s Most Valuable Brands – #46 Zara“, see bibliography below). An article in the New York Times Magazine (November 2012, “ How Zara Grew into the World’s Largest Fashion Retailer” see reference in bibliography below), placed the store count at around 5,900. Estimates vary on the number of Zara stores worldwide. Zara spends its money on opening new stores instead of spending a lot on ad campaigns. Because their clothing designs change often, it is harder for people to see them clearly on the Internet and thus they are encouraged to come into the stores instead and try on the unique fashions that Zara offers (screenshot below shows people at a Zara store in Madrid, Spain). In Spain customers visit Zara stores 17 times per year on average compared to 3 times per year for competitors. Annually there is 10 percent of inventory unsold compared to industry averages of 17 – 20 percent. MONORAIL SHIFT EXCHANGE FACEBOOK GROUP FULLZara sells 85 percent of its items at full price compared to the industry average of selling only 60 percent of items at full price. And that particular item or style may not be available again after it sells out. The short lead times for delivery of unique fashion items combined with short production runs enable Zara to offer customers more styles and choices, and yet still create a sense of urgency to buy because items often sell out quickly. Such short term focused order cycles make forecasts very accurate, much more accurate than competitors who may order every two weeks or every month.Ĭlothing items are priced based on market demand, not on cost of manufacture. Stores place orders twice a week and this drives factory scheduling. Zara has 12 inventory turns per year compared to 3 – 4 per year for competitors. As a consequence, Zara does not have lots of excess inventory, nor does it need to do big mark-downs on its clothing items. Short production runs create scarcity of given designs and that generates a sense of urgency and reason to buy while supplies last. They reach this market by locating their stores in town centers and places with high concentrations of women in this age range. The company’s core market is women 24 – 35 years old. New items can be designed and out to the stores in 4 – 6 weeks, and existing items can be modified in 2 weeks. When they see inspiring examples they quickly send design sketches to the garment designers at the Cube. Company Business ModelĪgents for the company are always scouting out new fashion trends at clubs and social gatherings. In 2019 Zara was ranked as the 46th most valuable brand in the world by Forbes (see bibliography below). It is the flagship business unit of a holding company called Inditex Corporation with headquarters in Arteixo, Galicia, a city in northwestern Spain near where Mr. The company was founded in Spain in 1974 by Amancio Ortega and his wife Rosalía Mera. The screenshot below shows a closeup satellite view of this facility. The heart of the Zara supply chain is a huge, highly automated distribution center (DC) called “The Cube”. Zara’s highly responsive supply chain is central to its business success. It carries about 11,000 distinct items per year in thousands of stores worldwide compared to competitors that carry 2,000 to 4,000 items per year in their stores. Zara changes its clothing designs every two weeks on average, while competitors change their designs every two or three months. The project expanded to 23 cities by the end of last year. Smart-contract technology could also make it possible to ensure welfare money is spent only on permitted items, such as food or medicine.Ĭhina’s digital yuan is the largest-scale experiment in CBDCs to date. They could also open up novel possibilities for revamping social welfare and financial inclusion, says Veneris, by enabling direct cash transfers to people regardless of whether they have a bank account. Much like cryptocurrencies, CBDCs could make it possible to instantly transfer money between people without relying on third parties, resulting in cheaper, faster payments. “Payment systems today are expensive they are clumsy and slow,” he says, pointing out that much of the underlying technology is more than 40 years old. One of the primary motivations is to improve the cost, speed, and flexibility of digital payment, says Veneris. Treasury Department to investigate the possibility of a digital dollar, and ac cording to the Atlantic Council, more than 50 countries are in advanced stages of exploring CBDCs. (Contrast these efforts at homespun national e-currencies with countries experimenting with making Bitcoin or other pre-existing cryptocurrencies legal tender, as El Salvador has recently done.) An executive order from the Biden administration in March called for the U.S. China has long been the global leader in this field, starting research on digital currencies in 2014 and launching pilots of its digital yuan in four cities in late 2019.īut in October 2020, the Bahamas became the first country to roll out a central bank digital currency (CBDC) nationwide, and since then digital versions of the East Caribbean dollar, Nigeria’s naira, and the Jamaican dollar have all launched. Now countries around the world are borrowing from crypto’s playbook to develop digital versions of national currencies. “They proved that there can be a new way to organize money and make payments, and that this can be widely adopted,” says Andreas Veneris, a professor of computer engineering at the University of Toronto, who has advised the Bank of Canada on digital currencies. Volatile prices and regulatory uncertainty have limited their adoption as a practical medium of payment, but the underlying technology has led to a major rethink of what money should look like in the digital age. Rich Turrin, author and fintech consultant “We have to be very careful in not ascribing superpowers to central bank digital currencies, when government has these powers over your existing bank accounts.” Second-generation cryptocurrencies like Ether also introduced the idea of programmable money, making it possible to create smart contracts that automate the execution of financial agreements. Since then a host of new cryptocurrencies has emerged, promising a fast, cheap, and secure way to transfer money directly between users without relying on banks or payment providers. That was turned on its head in 2009 with the launch of Bitcoin, which uses blockchain technology to delegate the minting and governance of the digital currency to a decentralized network of volunteers. In most developed economies, the production and distribution of money has been the sole remit of central banks for at least a century. These new forms of cash could boost financial inclusion, slash payment fees, and make money smarter, say experts, but they also present significant risks. Eager not to get left behind, central banks around the world are starting to develop their own digital currencies. The rise of cryptocurrencies is rewriting long-standing ideas about how money should work.

Coursework has included students making their own children’s books and studying birds for conservationists the Audubon Society. The school has been founded on the belief that education should be relevant to students’ lives, giving rise to some experimental school projects. We only have 450 students and there are schools down the street with 1,000 students and maybe that’s the place someone will want to learn in.” “That’s the great thing about New York City there are different schools for different learners. Leading a relatively new school which opened under such unique circumstances has its challenges, however, and not everyone gets what they are trying to do. What we really offer is two curriculums, one aligned to the exam, and another which is still aligned to the exam but based more on student and teacher interests.”Įvery nine weeks they press reset and offer a child something different if they need it, explains Bailey, adding that they make sure students go at the right pace through lots of assessment, with daily discussions and weekly mocks leading up to exams. “If a student is slower they can have more time. Once they’ve passed this exam they can take different units including classes on Vietnam and China, she says. Her students have the option of going through it quicker, and most complete it in one year. “We do retain some traditional parts of high school kids still need to earn credit and study certain topics but we go about studying them a little differently,” she explains.īailey gives the example of the New York global history and geography curriculum which is usually studied over two years. She says the main ways they met the brief was by changing how they use their time – mixing online learning with traditional teaching – and re-evaluating what they teach beyond the curriculum. When you group them all together it forms a substantial list. There are several specific design choices that Coral Island could have easily done just a little differently than Stardew Valley though. Though you can’t interact with most of the environment, the island does have a lot of detail, especially inside buildings. Coral Island also opts for tropical-themed 3D graphics, and 2D character art during dialogue sequences. For features still in development, the game clearly marks these as so on the island map and prevents you from entering relevant buildings. A few minor bugs were present as you’d expect, but nothing remotely close to game breaking. The UI, character interactions, farming mechanics, questlines, crafting, fishing, catching insects, mining, farm customisations, and more are all available and fleshed out. My initial experience with Coral Island showed it’s on track for a smooth Early Access release with a substantial amount of content. Slimes will actually ambush you pretty early on in the mines and farming tools seem to be useless against them. Fighting enemies seems to still be in development, as I was unable to obtain a weapon. The gameplay mechanics here are simple, but addictive for those who love to collect rare items. As for insects, they’ll spot you at a certain distance and you need to use a net to snag them before a short timer runs out and they escape. Fishing is fairly straightforward, as your goal is to avoid tension in your fishing rod while filling up a meter by holding down the left mouse button. Both are fairly simple, but it’s fun to roam around looking for new fishing spots or insects crawling about. There are two interesting minigames - fishing and catching insects. Coral Island seems balanced overall and I didn’t run into any roadblocks in player progression. Quests are a great way to claim chunks of coins for completing fairly simple tasks. Obtaining certain quality of life items like a larger backpack and more efficient tools are a must, but you need to have some cash on hand to do so. Starting out, I tried my best to focus on crops and generating income, since everything is pricey. Random events and cutscenes break up your day, and certain objectives like donating items to the museum keep you on the hunt for collectibles. You can choose to spend time customising your farmhouse, completing quests, or exploring the island - the list goes on. Once you establish your farming routine, you’ll quickly discover there are tons of other things to do than simply manage crops. In which order should I clear quests to progress the fastest? What’s the optimal strategy for making money? How can I increase my movement speed to maximise NPC interactions per day? Eventually, I decided to just casually explore the world of Coral Island as intended. As someone who has put an unhealthy amount of time into Stardew Valley, everything was immediately familiar and my mind began skipping ahead to long-term goals. These objectives range from planting and harvesting crops to speaking with key characters. A few initial quests get you started, without forcing you to go through an explicit tutorial. You start off as a newcomer to the titular island and are given a worn-down farm covered with debris. #STARDEW VALLEY LAYOUT FULL#During my time with the Early Access preview, I was able to experience a full year of in-game time, with the majority of core features already present. The island theme and extensive list of features make Coral Island a highly anticipated release in the farm sim genre. The game had an extremely successful backing on Kickstarter, quickly reaching every stretch goal and generating loads of hype. Many features are undeniably similar between the two games, but Coral Island does offer a larger town, some entirely new gameplay mechanics, and tons of characters to meet. With a plethora of farm simulation RPGs available to play and many more on the horizon, you might dismiss Coral Island as yet another Stardew Valley clone.
